New Year. The time for change, for that promise to join the gym, and the promise never ever ever to drink again after the lovely hangover that you wake up to on New Year’s Day. Whilst we set too many goals on ourselves all at once and it isn’t always reachable, here are some small little habits that I want to incorporate into my day, to make myself a better person.
‘New Year, New Me?’ Nope. But New Year, Improved Me? I hope so!
Reading three pages a day.
With everything so instant nowadays, I know how hard it is to sometimes zone off, and pick up a book BUT by giving yourself a small goal of just three pages a day, you’re engaging your brain, learning, taking some time out and unwinding.
Duolingo, three minutes a day.
Duolingo is a language learning app, that I have used many times to teach, and brush up on my French. There are other apps like it but this is the one that I use. By just committing to three minutes a day, it’s manageable and you’d be so surprised by how much you take in.
New word a day.
I love the idea of this. The English language is full of some weird and wonderful words, and every day I want to try and learn a new one. Not only will it help my writing (if I start writing words like ‘Kerfuffle’ ‘anthropomorphism’ and ‘cacophonies’ in Beauty blog reviews you have permission to tell me to stop), but it will stimulate my brain, and it’s a bit of fun.
Write 100 words a day.
I have a very talented writer/director friend (hi Henry), who makes himself write something every single day. He genuinely writes from the point of view as a potato living his life – Now I know it sounds like madness, but his writing is so intelligent and interesting, that clearly forcing yourself to write something every single day works, he’s the proof.
Track your meals.
I started doing this in April, and at first I did it to record my intake, but now I do it just to make sure that I have some balance in there. I use the app, My Fitness Pal. It’s not about punishing myself, as I say, life is short eat the cake, but then maybe don’t eat pizza two hours later. Life is about balance, and I’m trying to find it.
Exercise. Start small, 10 minutes a day.
I know that exercise can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Just ten minutes of a jog, a walk, lifting weights, swimming – anything that makes you happy, will give your body some love, and also your mind. You’d be amazed at what ten minutes of anything positive a day, can do to your life.
Drink one litre of water a day.
Good for the hair, skin, your brain, your body. The list goes on and on, one litre a day. Everyone knows how important water is but I think a lot of us neglect it. It’s also an excuse to treat yourself to a reusable bottle like Chilly’s!
I always always see the worst in situations. I’m not a glass half full girl, I never have been, and maybe that will never change but I’m going to give it a good go! From recording my daily gratitudes, to trying to change my mindset, I’m ready to embrace becoming a little pocket of sunshine – (or maybe just a little ray… I’ll settle for a ray.)
Don’t hit the snooze button.
I know what it’s like, you’re so comfortable and dreaming and cozy and then it starts. Your alarm. BUT by hitting it you’re wasting time, getting off to a bad start to your day, and also by sleeping too much you end up tricking your body into thinking you’re tired! Read my my blog post on How to Be a Morning Person here.
Get enough sleep.
Being a night owl AND a morning person is incredibly frustrating, but I’m going to make sure I put down my phone, and stop writing at least an hour before I go to bed. ASMR doesn’t count, right?
Write down everything you spend.
I literally started doing this this month, and I’m shocked at the outgoing expenses which don’t even need to be there. I’ve cancelled so many debits that I didn’t even realise existed, from the Postcode Lottery, to app subscriptions that I don’t even use! By doing this I’ll have saved myself £50 a month. A MONTH.
I’d love to hear everyone’s goals for 2019, and new habits they’re going to introduce! It always feels exciting knowing a fresh slate is on the horizon.
