MY SELF-CARE CHECKLIST

Up until last year, self care wasn’t really high up on my list of priorities. Sure, I took care of myself, but I never gave myself much downtime. It was always work study, sleep and repeat. Wellbeing has been on the rise for years now, and I can safely say that by giving myself allocated downtime for strictly Sophie time, I have found a really good work life balance, and I have never been happier.

Here are some little ways of taking care of yourself that I find really rewards me!

GRAB A CUP OF TEA.

I’m really throwing the whole cup of tea thing out a lot, how very English, I know. But I find it really relaxing and soothing, to sit and get cozy with a warm cup of tea. I try to drink three cups of green tea a day, the benefits are amazing, it’s the healthiest beverage in the world so I can’t argue with that. I try to mix it up with flavours, from Jasmine, Pomegranate, Lemon, to even Cherry Bakewell (I’ll be honest, that one is not as tasty as it sounds). The heat soothes me and I genuinely like the flavour, although I know that it’s not for everyone! If I’m feeling naughty I’ll have a warm way too milky cup of tea with perhaps two – ok three, sugars, or even a hot chocolate. The endorphins from the chocolate also makes you feel calmer and happier, so hey don’t blame me, it’s science!

EATING YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD.

I try to live by everything in moderation, and whilst that is a really good way to have a balanced diet, every once in a while it’s really good to indulge yourself. Life is short – eat the chocolate.

EXERCISE.

If you’d have told me four months ago, that working out was a daily thing for me, I wouldn’t have believed you at all, but two stone down, and four months later and here we are. Whether it’s going for a walk and just getting out of the house, doing Pilates, or hitting the gym, I know that even if I don’t feel like working out, the second I finish I feel amazing and really proud of myself that I did it. I’m taking care of not only my body, but also my mind. It’s funny because even though I know that I look different, and my body has changed, the biggest change that I have noticed is all mental. It’s made me feel stronger and believe more in myself that if you put your mind to something, you can do it! An evening walk, especially when it’s magic hour, with my puppy is a really great way for me to clear my thoughts and unwind after a hard day.

READ A BOOK.

I used to be a huge reader when I was growing up, my Famous Five, Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton and Harry Potter books were practically dog bitten from me using them so much, but recently, as with most people, I get so tied down in life that I forget to allow myself more time. Recently I’ve been really trying to do some more reading, even if it’s just for 30 minutes a day, and I find that it really does help me escape the world for a little bit. I’ve been enjoying Self Help & poetry books a lot lately, particularly by Rupi Kaur and Sarah Knight. They’re an easy read, and you can keep coming back to them.

LIGHT CANDLES.

When I’m stressed, there’s nothing more beneficial that I love, than putting on some ASMR (WhispersRed and ItsBlitzz are my personal favourites), and lighting some candles. My favourite scents are fresh ones, like Linen and Lace, Peony and Fresh Towels from Yankee Candle, and even these gorgeous scents that I picked up from Aldi for an absolute steal!

SHOWER. BATH.

I mean, who doesn’t love a warm hot shower or bath after a long day? I’m a terrible shower singer but it really does just let me escape and relax, and feel fresh for the day.

GUILTY PLEASURE.

I’m not sure if I believe in the phrase ‘guilty pleasure’ because you should never feel guilty for liking something – even if it’s watching Storage Hunters on Dave. But we all have them, and whatever they are, make sure that you dedicate some time to indulging yourself in them. If after a hard day at work, you want nothing more than to come home and watch videos of puppies on YouTube, curl up and listen to some ASMR (always sends me to sleep instantly and calms me when I’m stressed), or watching Ghost Adventures, watering the garden, making bread, oh I don’t know but you get the point, self care is so important, take care of yourself first, and then you are happy and able to take care of others too.

DRINK WATER.

This sounds ridiculously simple, but hear me out. I try to drink 3 litres of water a day, and having a bottle as beautiful (and re-usable) as my bottle from Chilly’s certainly helps. Water has so many benefits, it flushes out toxins from your body, reduces fatigue, gives you more energy, can boost your metabolism, and not to mention improves your skin too.
